Could you suggest online enrichment activities for my granddaughter, who is in third grade, to do after school?

For this response, we turned to Jillian Baden Bershtein, a Professional Educator and an Adjunct Professor specializing in Elementary Education, Mathematics, and Literacy at The College of New Jersey. Here's what she had to say:

Scholastic offers lots of educational activities online for your third grader. Study Jams, for example, includes exciting videos on math and science topics and a "test yourself" option for your granddaughter after each video. She can also benefit from The STACKS on the Scholastic site, where there are games, author profiles, videos, message boards, and more. If your granddaughter wants to keep up with kid-friendly news, she can read the weekly articles on CLASSROOM NEWSBREAK.

Your third grader may also enjoy making an educational ABC book on her computer to donate to the local library or child-care center. Have her choose a topic that she is interested in—animals, say—help her outline the book, and have her conduct research for each letter. She can create a page for each letter, complete with pictures and a fact, and bind the pages together to "publish" a book. This will be a big undertaking, but once the project is completed, the product will be beyond rewarding.
