My seventh grader would rather watch TV than read. How do I make reading enjoyable while also getting her to read more often?

It's possible that your daughter isn't eager to read because the selections just aren't engaging. Everyone has different interests and tastes. Try talking with her to see which topics most engage her.

One suggestion is to have a "two-chapter rule": For every book your daughter brings home from the library (and library books work better with this method), she has to read at least two chapters. Then you can discuss whether to continue with the book. If she isn't excited about it, she can choose another. But she has to finish whatever book she decides on. The idea is to help her choose books she looks forward to sitting down with for a little while each day.
